چکیده

Our research examines the interactive effects of metal (Cu, Cr, Cd, Hg, and Pb) and diesel-fuel contaminants on the benthic food web of a coastal salt marsh and the specific role that Cu plays in this suite of contaminants. Specifically, we are examining how diesel and metal contaminants interact to influence the microbial (bacteria and microalgae), invertebrate, and juvenile fish components of the benthic community, and how their interactions influence trophic relationships among organisms. Previous studies have focused on either the ecotoxicological effects of metals or the effects of hydrocarbons, but essentially nothing is known about how these two classes of contaminants interact. The modes of toxicity of hydrocarbons and metals are quite different, and individually they may elicit different, sometimes opposite, ecological responses. Impacted field sediments, especially in harbors,

Benthic-Pelagic Linkages in Lakes: Using Stable Isotopes to Quantify Effects of Residential Shoreline Development on Lake Ecosystems

Historically the importance of benthic primary production to the structure and function of lake ecosystems has been underestimated. With increasing recognition of the importance of benthic-pelagic linkages in lakes, researchers recently have demonstrated that benthic production can ‘subsidize’ pelagic food webs. These findings indicate that loss of benthic production may lead to a reduction in ...

Effect of Co-existing Heavy Metals and Natural Organic Matter on Sorption/Desorption of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Soil: A Review

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), abundant in mixed contaminant sites, often coexist with heavy metals. The fate and remediation of PAHs depend heavily on the sorption and desorption behavior of these contaminants. The sorption behavior can in turn be highly affected by certain soil components and properties, such as soil organic matter (SOM) and the presence of heavy metals. Through rev...

The Effect of Different Cooking Methods on Lead and Cadmium Contents of Shrimp and Lobster

ABSTRACT: Regular consumption of seafood has been widely recommended by the authorities. However, some species especially benthic crustaceans accumulate heavy metals. In addition, the health risks associated to the consumption of such seafood might increase if the consumers use cooking methods that enhance the concentration of heavy metals. In this study, the effects of different cooking method...

Bioavailability of metals in stream food webs and hazards to brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) in the upper Animas River watershed, Colorado.

The water quality, habitats, and biota of streams in the upper Animas River watershed of Colorado, USA, are affected by metal contamination associated with acid drainage. We determined metal concentrations in components of the food web of the Animas River and its tributaries-periphyton (aufwuchs), benthic invertebrates, and livers of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis)-and evaluated pathways of...
